Taiwan Government gives Linux Big Boost
"Weve covered a continous battle on the island of Taiwan between Microsoft software and Linux during this year, but now it seems the Taiwanese government will step in. And on the side of Linux rather than Microsoft." Got 15 minutes? Open your computer. Look particularly at the CPU and Memory chips. Guess where they come from almost certainly. Taiwan. Anybody that thinks this is 'no biggie' should stop and think again. Taiwan IS the 'IT Industry' in far too many ways to count. Hello? Is there anybody out there... :)

IBM and Linux our Biggest Threats - Microsoft
"IBM and Linux combined represent a threat and inspiration as Microsoft Corp. drives into enterprise computing, top company executives said yesterday." It's funny. Way back when, before W2K had been unleashed on an unsuspecting world, I spoke of this very thing. I said in a report from the W2K 'beta bashers' mailing list that one of the biggest things Linux had going for it was a 'Community' to turn to for support. That comment came from an MCSE, not from me. Two years later and it's 'official' as Microsoft finally realizes the importance of a 'developer community' and talks about that very thing in this article. Nice to be vindicated once in a while. :) Guess even Microsoft has to admitt reality after being slapped in the face with it daily.

RealNetworks to (kinda) Open Source
RealNetworks is to open 'bits' of code to the Open Source community, but some folks still aint happy. And just so you all know, this year's UK Big Brother is now over. After 64 days of watching total strangers locked in a house making fools of themselves, you can now expect linuxdot service to ressume to normal... that is of course if we can all stop playing WarCraft III...if.

Mandrake 9.0 Beta
Oh joy, another distro has had it's packages updated, added a few new icons and wallpapers, jazzed up the packaging and gave it a cool name like, Mandrake 9.0. I for one can barly contain myself, no really. Yes it's that time again folks, among other things, here's what you can expect: "KDE 3.0.2 and GNOME 2.0, new icons on the KDE desktop, new user images, new wallpaper" I'm not taking the piss, that's what the site says. For possible legal reasons I'll just add that Mandrake is a fine distro, similar to Redhat, in fact almost identical...anyway, I'm sure this update will be revolutionary.

Open Source Helix by Real Networks will play all media files, even Windows
"RealNetworks, the company that brings us Real Player, announced today that it is launching Helix, an Open Standard for multimedia application development and deployment. The Helix platform brings with it standardized APIs that will allow playback of most multimedia formats, including .wmf (Windows Media Player), .mov (Quicktime), and .rm (Real)." Well, I'll have to look at the license closely myself. Could be a 'good thing' if the 'Open Source' bit isn't just fluff and a bit of 'smoke and mirrors' as is the case far too often for my liking.

Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 Released
"The Debian Project is pleased to announce the release of Debian GNU/Linux version 3.0. This is the first version of Debian that features cryptographic software integrated into the main distribution. OpenSSH and GNU Privacy Guard are included in the default installation, and strong encryption is now present in web browsers and web servers, databases, and so forth. Further integration of cryptographic software is planned for future releases. KDE 2.2, GNOME 1.4, and XFree86 4.1, plus support for both 2.2 and 2.4 kernels." Lot of good stuff here. I like Debian, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is apt-get which will allow you to keep your systems files up-to-date on security fixes in about as transparent a way as possible. All your excuses are gone. Check it out. :)

Perl 5.8.0 Released
"The latest version of Perl has been released, with new features such as better Unicode support, a new threads implementation, new I/O layer support, and a whole plethora of bundled modules - plus a wonderful collection of regression tests and new documentation."I just received 'Perl in a Nutshell, 2nd ed.' from O'Reilly for Review. I'll be posting something on that, and other books already received, such as 'Network Security with OpenSSL' and 'Ruby in a Nutshell' soon.

Peru mulls Free Software, Gates gives $550K to Peru Prez
"Peru, you see, has been threatening to outlaw Windows by mandating Free Software in government departments. And seriously folks, it's not widely known, (or at least, not widely enough) that when major Microsoft contracts or customers are in peril, Bill is frequently deployed as the Ultimate Weapon." Hmmm...is this legal? Probably. Unfortunately. Some folks, myself included, might call this a bit of 'blatant bribery' but since it's outside the U.S. not a thing to be done is there? Does anybody still think that Microsoft got a 'raw deal' from the U.S. Justice Department when they were declared a 'monopoly'? If you do, I suggest you try a bit of coffee. Time to wake up pal.

Commentary: Open-sourcing the business desktop.
"I've long been a fan of Open Source software. It offers high quality at a low cost. That said, until recently I would not have recommended a general deployment of an open source O/S on business desktops. Lack of applications, lack of support, and general ease of use concerns, all conspired to make it a risky proposition at best. However, the balance is shifting. Projects like Mozilla and Open Office are at a stage where they offer acceptable alternatives to the Windows products they compete with. The fact that they work on Windows, and interoperate with Microsoft products, offers businesses a great starting point for a migration." Lengthy. Worth it though. Wonder if Steve is listening? :)

Linux IM's for Everyone: No matter your taste, there's an IM client out there for you.
"Somehow, some way, people who are new to Linux have gotten the idea that Linux has limited IM choices. Because the Unix family was the first to have popular IM clients, with 'talk' leading the way, that's more than a little silly. It is true that if you want the latest AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) features or MSN Messenger you're out of luck, but there are many other clients to choose from and some will let you talk to your buddies whether they're on AIM, MSN, or even Yahoo." Excellent read.

"The Naval Oceanographic Office already uses Linux and other Open Source tools for a variety of functions, and it could use them even more after it receives recommendations from the Open Source Software Institute, due out by the end of the year."Bloody Penguins! They're everywhere! :)

Ballmer 'fesses up to Linux/Windows cost FUD
"Windows is a lot more expensive to run than Linux, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has finally confessed. Despite Redmond's heroic efforts to defeat common knowledge with elaborately-rigged total cost of ownership 'studies', innuendo, FUD and outright distortions, the rhetorical power of common experience has become too powerful, even for a marketing behemoth like MS."'Read it. Interesting how truth has a way of coming out despite all one can do to keep it locked away isn't it? Sorry I've been away from the site so long. Was in hospital for a while. Fine now. Somebody tear Laurence and crew away from their game eh? :)'
