| .Net Server, XP Pro, what's the difference? |
| A few registry entries seems to be the answer. Don't count on this link being active for long, as I'm sure you're all aware, it's illegal to point out ANYTHING, that will embarass or upset Microsoft... No? Well it's only a matter of time. To prove a point, ADTW has released a tool that simply modifies the registry a bit, and turns your .net server into a nice shiny XP Pro box. Now personally I'd rather not have either of these anywhere near my machines, but isn't it a tad scarey that this is all that separates different versions Windows? That and a price hike of course. |

| Microsoft loses request to block Lindows.com |
| Blind lady justice has ruled the word windows generic and therefor of questionable trademarking. You can read many highlights from the link above and download the complete 30-page ruling. "Although Lindows.com certainly made a concious decision to play with fire by choosing a product and a company name that differs by only one letter from the world's leading software program, one could easily conclude that in 1983 Microsoft made an equally risky decision to name its product after a term commonly used in the trade..."

| Another truly worthwhile article by Gary Rogers over at OsOpinion.com. "So, I say to Microsoft: Go ahead, take your ball home. Go play with yourself. | No more excuses: It's time to stop using Microsoft's products. |
| Truly excellent post on Newsforge by Robin (Roblimo) Miller. I have nothing to add. Read it. "Microsoft management is now threatening to stop shipping Windows completely, if the next federal court decision goes against them. This is insane. If I used Windows in my business I would be working hard to switch to Linux -- or Mac or BSD -- as fast as I possibly could, just in case Microsoft decides to follow through on this threat."

''Screw the consumer, screw our constituents. We only bow to our masters, the music and film industry.'' "And now, record companies - who have allied themselves with the just-as-bad motion picture industry - want to make it a felony for you to own a computer that is capable of copying music from a CD to your portable player without paying them money, even though courts have held that such copying is entirely legal."

| Industry of change: Linux storms Hollywood |
| I was aware Linux was making it big in Hollywood, with films like Shrek, but unaware of just how big. This article, one of the best I have read in some time, details it all from start to present. "Back in June 2001, Ray Feeney, technology committee chair of the Visual Effects Society said, ''For the high-end part of movie making, 80-90% will be Linux-based inside of 18 months. Everything is going Linux.'' This sort of mass migration has never happened before in the Linux world. The tidal wave is here."

And the victims were not getting just one spam from each company, but hundreds. To make matters worse, every time one victim sent an e-mail reply to complain, that e-mail was forwarded on to everybody else on the list. Far from abating the torrent of spam, each complaint merely exacerbated the problem."

| An interesting story in which games can now have more realistic physics thanks to a physics engine called Havoc. "Already 50 games makers have signed up for the Havok engine and it is being used in high-profile titles such as Warcraft III and Deus Ex 2." Perhaps someone could plug this into Doom, so after blowing the heads clean off thirty Cyberdemons, we could finally assail that precipitous 2ft killer ledge? |

| Judge defers GPL questions for trial in MySQL vs. Progress Software |
| GNU has a short press release on the initial Judge's decision in the MySQL case (the first time the GPL is to be used in court): "On the matter of Progress' distribution rights under GNU GPL, she has not granted an injunction. In the public hearing this week, Judge Saris made clear that she sees the GNU GPL to be an enforceable and binding license, but that as long as Progress Software appears to be presently in compliance with the GNU GPL, there is probably no irreparable harm being caused to MySQL AB. Since Progress did previously distribute in violation of the GNU GPL and thus did harm MySQL AB and the Free Software community, the FSF expects MySQL to prevail at trial on these claims. The Court recognizes in today's order that MySQL ''seems to have the better argument''."
