----[ EDITORIAL Hello once again my fine feathered friends. The first thing I should mention is why the name of the newsletter has changed. LinuxMall informed me that "The Linux Newsletter" and "Linux Newsletter" are trademarks of WorkGroup Solutions, Inc. and asked me if I would change the name of the newsletter to save confusion. They were nice about the whole thing and even gave a link to my site. They also want to be the primary mirror for the Newbie's Linux Manual so now LinuxMall have made it into my good books! Once again I've included links to all this week's new sections of the site at the end of this newsletter. Until next week, later dudes (and dudettes).
----[ TURNS OUT SUSE IS JUST AS BIG AS RED HAT! When I first came across this it came as quite a shock I can tell you! Here was me living under a veil of ignorance when lo and behold, down from the Net came a press release from SuSE stating the fact that SuSE is just as big as Red Hat (thought to be the biggest Linux distributor). Here's the figures to prove it, for the year ending in March:+-----------+-------------+-------------+ | Company | SuSE | Red Hat | +===========+=============+=============+ | Revenues | $10 million | $11 million | +-----------+-------------+-------------+ | Employees | 130 | 127 | +-----------+-------------+-------------+ All I can say is, "Go figure!".
----[ DELL CONSIDERS UNIX AND LINUX I've been foreseeing this for a while now, and finally it looks like it's going to take fruition. Dell the world's largest computer mail-order company and definitely one of the largest companies in the world are considering moving away from using Windows NT for Intel's 64-bit "Merced" chip when it appears and opt for Unix instead. They've also stated that Linux fits the company's high-volume philosophy, meaning you'll see an ever increasing support by Dell for Linux, helping it gain popularity no-end.With Dell behind it, it won't be long until many other large companies follow suit.
----[ QUOTE OF THE WEEK Whoa, deja-vu. News.com have an article covering Dell's move to back Unix and Linux. Contained in the article is this candid quote:"Microsoft is a jealous mistress. They don't take kindly to any company that moves away from its platform."
----[ WINDOWS 2000 A FAILURE Jesse Berst's words not mine. Famous for his ZDNet Anchordesk, Jesse Berst is regarded by many as thee computer journalist to listen to. Read his opinion of Windows 2000 in which he basically tears it to shreds without showing much mercy. Considering the huge popularity of ZDNet and the weight Jesse Berst's words carry, this surely has to be quite an embarrassment for Microsoft (although I'm sure they're used to it by now ;) ). - Source -
