----[ EDITORIAL

Hi folks. First I'd like to apologise for being away from the site for ages. My life got pretty hectic for a while and I had to do the responsible thing and put the site on hold for a while, but I'm back now. Hopefully this will not happen again, as I'm really enjoying working on the site and this newsletter.

I'll hopefully get lots of time this week to update the Newbie's Linux Manual. One thing the manual desperately needs is a section on setting file access rights and group access rights. Then I'll get on to teaching you about writing your own scripts.

----[ MIDNIGHT COMMANDER FROM THE COMMAND LINE!

A nice little application for you to try out is Midnight Commander. It lets you quickly browse through your Linux directories. You've probably already tried it out in X, but did you know you could use it from the command line?

To run Midnight Commander, simply enter:

mc

There are hundreds of options for you to learn, so at first it may appear a little daunting. To access the many options use the F1 to F10 keys. One important key is F9 which will activate the pull-down menus. Enjoy!

----[ SOME COMMANDS FOR YOU TO TRY OUT

I'll be including the following commands in more detail in the manual in the near future, but for now, here they are for you to try out:

lpr
Description: Send a text file to the printer.
Example : lpr my_file

head
Description: Displays the first ten lines of a file as text.
Example : head my_file

file
Description: Displays exactly what a file (or files) contain, e.g.:
             my_file: English text
             my_file: directory
             my_file: Bourne Shell script file
             my_file: symbolic link to ..var/tmp
Example : file my_file

For more information on these commands, consult the info pages, i.e.:

info lpr
info head
info file

----[ MINDCRAFT REGRET SIDING WITH MICROSOFT IT SEEMS

"Lies, Damn Lies, and Benchmarks" is the title of a Network Computing column trashing the Mindcraft report. On

Mindcraft's website, you'll find articles insisting that the company can't understand why the Linux community and others went ballistic upon learning that the tests were paid for by Microsoft and performed in its labs. The word clueless springs to mind. Mindcraft is now locked in a battle it can't win. The company is trying to save its name, but it's already lost on that point.

They say "any publicity is good publicity" but where benchmark testing is concerned, reputation is everything. I don't know about you, but I won't be taking anything they ever say in future seriously, no matter how accurate their tests are. When you side with the devil, you must pay the price... allegedly. ;)

----[ QUOTE OF THE WEEK

The quote of the week comes from an article run by

ZDNet:

"When a competitor reaches a certain threshold, Microsoft starts to pay attention," says Tony Iams, an analyst with D.H. Brown, a Port Chester, N.Y., consulting group. "Linux has clearly reached that point."

----[ ANOTHER INTERESTING QUOTE

Another interesting quote (again from

ZDNet) came from Evan Liebovitch about Red Hat's price increase:

"The Red Hat price boost is also helping the other Linux distributions, since it's causing Red Hat users to consider alternatives."
